Enablis Entrepreneurial Network East Africa (Enablis) is proud to announce that it has partnered with Institute of Directors Kenya (IOD-K) and Commercial Bank of Africa Limited (CBA) to support CBA’s SME clients in Kenya by providing them with experienced Directors as advisors.
This initiative aims at enhancing performance of SME boards thereby improving the SMEs performance. It is based on global evidence that good board performance builds and sustains successful businesses, and can therefore be the most powerful catalyst for launching African SMEs into the next generation of corporates. The role of a Board Advisor is to infuse strategic thinking, formalize Board processes, and create a culture of accountability to enhance execution of Board decisions.
The target group for this initiative are, among others family-owned enterprises, most of whom do not have formalized boards, and therefore have no structured processes of evaluating the performance of the owners/directors, while holding them accountable to achieving the business targets.
This product was launched on March 31, 2014 at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi. We had an impressive turn out of approximately 80 SME owners and IOD members. There was a successful speed-dating/match making activity in which the owners got to move around and pitch their business and business needs to IOD members for an allotted time period. By the end of this event 34 of the SME owners had signed up to be matched with specific IOD members.
At the event, we were honoured to have Paul Kinuthia, founder and CEO of InterConsumer Products Ltd, who was guest speaker of the day. Mr. Kinuthia, indigenous entrepreneur ventured in cosmetic business, a multinational dominated space, seventeen years ago. While he has a humble beginning, he was able to turn it to a multimillion shilling company. He encouraged the participants to persevere through obstacles that may come their way, and more importantly create control systems and structures. He illustrated the importance of setting up a board for their companies saying that it was at the point that he set up a board that his business took an upward trajectory.
